Pianist Joseph Shippee is a graduate student and adjunct instructor in piano performance at New York University under the tutelage of Dr. Jose Ramon Mendez. A native of Des Moines, Iowa, he first gained recognition in regional competitions. As an undergraduate, he placed among the top national collegiate pianists at the Music Teachers National Association Division competition, representing the state of Massachusetts twice. He has performed many concerts around New York and New England, ranging from chamber music programs and master classes to solo performances. Past concerto performances include Liszt's Totentanz and Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 2 under the baton of Ronald Feldman and the Berkshire Symphony. He also performed the piano part for the world premiere of Ojaua, an orchestral work by Emiliano Pardo-Tristan debuted by the NYU Symphony. Mr. Shippee was most recently featured this summer in international music festivals such as PianoTexas (formerly TCU-Cliburn) and the Gijon Piano Festival in Spain.
Mr. Shippee is active as a speaker and music educator as well. He is an adjunct instructor of piano and keyboard harmony courses at NYU. As a speaker, he recently completed a series of presentations to high school students, showcasing classical piano music through performance and discussion. Such presentations aim to engage audiences through accessible musical examples, realizing that familiarity and understanding lead to greater music appreciation.
His primary teachers include Jose Ramon Mendez, Doris Stevenson, Chiu-Ling Lin, and Jan Johnson. He has participated in masterclasses led by distinguished pianists such as Garrick Ohlsson, Alexander Slobodyanik, Jeremy Denk, Alexander Kobrin, and Ursula Oppens. In his spare time, he enjoys baseball, reading, and finance. Prior to pursuing music, he worked as an investment banking analyst at J.P. Morgan. He holds a bachelor's degree in philosophy from Williams College.
