They are Roman Catholic converts who have been allowed to retain their former Anglican rites. Hence, the term "Anglican Use."

You could say the same of Nadia Comaneci's routines in the 1970's: she, too, took small hops on her landings -- yet scored 10's. The fact is that standards were different back then, and judges were far more lenient. This let to the massive score inflation of the 1980's.

Standards were looser back then; a slight hop on the dismount didn't incur the type of deductions you see in today's scoring. If you look at some of the "10" routines performed by Nadia Comaneci, you'll notice that there were steps and hops as well. The judges still regarded her performances as...

@GymFloozie I agree: she was second to Svetlana during the optionals; and she didn't benefi from the psychological damage cased by the faulty vauling horse. After all: she, too, vaulted off that low horse during an early rotation.

I've tried listening to the other YouTube videos of this performance; but nothing beats the Gilels version. I simply can't listen to the other duos -- not even Badura and Skoda (the first I heard performing this piece).

@MostepanovaFan Indeed: I've always thought of the 1970's as the major turning point in women's gymnastics -- in terms of difficulty. There's no doubt that the sport in the 1960's and prior was a complete joke -- with gymnasts performing moves that those today could (almost literally) do in thei...

@Farnik01 Like the accompaniment to Ernest Bloch's Poeme Mystique, the accompaniment to Ravel's Tzigane really can be thought of as a virtuoso piano piece, in its own right.
The empty cross is not meant to deny the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Rather, it signifies his conquering death.
