Giacomo La Vita was born in the countryside near Florence, Italy, but grew up in the U.S. where he took up the guitar at the age of 10. For the last 15 years Giacomo has performed as both a soloist and ensemble musician in major halls in New York City, as well as in many cities across the U.S., in his native Italy, and throughout Europe. Highlights of the 2010-11 season include performances in Geneva, Berlin, and New York at Merkin Hall, and with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra under the baton of Maestro James Levine.

A top prize winner of 15 international guitar competitions, Giacomo is the only instrumentalist in the history of Mannes College of Music to win the annual Concerto Competition twice: in 2001 with the Fastasia para un Gentilhombre, and in 2005 with the Conceirto de Aranjuez, both by Rodrigo. At age 19 he was the subject of an ABC Television Network profile, and performed live on KQTV television.

Giacomo founded the La Vita-Williams Guitar Duo, which released a commercially available CD of classical guitar duets, and performs in a voice-guitar duo with his wife, soprano Jeanai La Vita. Always seeking to enlarge the repertory, Giacomo is an avid arranger of music for guitar and has published many solo and ensemble works, ranging from Scarlatti to Rachmaninoff. Currently he is transcribing and recording the great keyboard works of J.S. Bach for solo guitar and guitar ensemble (a project which has won Giacomo a place as a finalist for a 2011-12 Fulbright Award). He has had new music written and dedicated to him (such as the 2003 ground-breaking work Ballade for solo guitar by Ronn Yedidia), commissioned new works for guitar, and is himself the composer of music for solo, duo and trio guitars. Giacomo also performs with the world-music group DanzaNova, which presents virtuosic renditions of ethnic music from Central and Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Latin America. A CD from DanzaNova is to be released in the Fall of 2011.

In addition to performing, Giacomo is also a well-known guitar instructor and has an active private studio in Manhattan. He has taught at many music schools as well, including the State University of New York at Purchase. He received his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from Mannes College of Music under the tutelage of guitarist/ composer Frederic Hand. He has been mentored and coached by pianist/composer Ronn Yedidia, and in his formative years studied with guitarist Ricardo Cobo.
