Mahahual steals your heart! Mahahual (Majuhual) is a Mayan word that means 'trees surrounded by water'. Mahahual is in the Costa Maya of Quintana Roo. Mahahual is about 3 km away (or a $3 taxi ride) from the Port of Costa Maya. It is the most beautiful, quaint, Mexican fishing village with a population of about 600 people which can swell to about 2000 when Cruise Ships dock. The Malacar or boardwalk along some of the town's beach is about 1.5 miles long. On one side the beautiful azure green blue of the Caribbean with white powder sand beach, the great Mesoamerican reef just a little beyond, grass thatched palapas and on the other side, restaurants, shops and beach bars. And then there's the people! The warm hearts, the friendly smiles ~ we have new friends & familiy there now and I can't wait to spend more time there!!
Dzibanche Mayan Ruins in souther Quintana Roo Mexico are spectacular! It's about an hour and twenty minutes from the Port of Costa Maya/Mahahual. The ruins are not mainstream so few people are there. Completely in the jungle they are magical and cover a massive area! I look forward to returning to spend more time!
Banco Chinchorro is an atoll reef lying in the Mexican Caribbean, about 35 km offshore the fishing village of Mahahual in the Costa Maya. It's approximately 40.2 km long from north to south and approximately 16 km wide at its widest point. The atoll has 3 islands with a land area of only about 6 square kms. The islands are: 1. Cayo Norte 2. Cayo Centro - occupied by 65 fishermen and one Government Building 3. Caya Lobos
We stayed at Cayo Centro with a local Fisherman. Some of the fishermen have homes on the island. Inocencia's house is built on stilts, over the ocean. Below it, sharks and crocodiles wait to eat the entrails from the fisherman's catch. The island is predominantly mangroves and lagoon and absolutely beautiful! The mangroves are filled with all kinds of birds and the lagoon is home to approximately 600 saltwater crocodiles.
The history of this area is of pirates and treasure! The waters are abundant with ship wrecks as gallions chased pirates and met their fate on the coral.
The snorkeling is world class - so many fish, so many varieties of fish and I even got to snorkel with sharks - both nurse sharks and reef sharks! Next time I will have my dive certificate! More info will be in an upcoming Blog.
Yellow Stone National Park is located in Wyoming, Montana & Idaho. It's known for its wildlife, especially the Buffalo, Elk, Bears, etc. & many birds as well as it's its many geothermal features; mud pots & geysers and especially Old Faithful Geyser, one of the most popular features in the park. Yellowstone is in fact considered a supervolcano. In spots, it's like you have stepped into another world. Loved it!! USA 2011 Road Trip: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL45400327E0E57B3C
Xcaret is Cancun's most amazing eco park; mayan culture, beach, scuba diving, entertainment, wildlife and just plain Fun! It is a Maya civilization archaeological site located on the Caribbean coastline of the Yucatán Peninsula also known as the Riviera Maya.
Isla Mujeres, Mexico is beautiful!! The punta, the coast, the beaches, the snorkeling and then there's the people. It's truly a must visit!
Isla Mujeres is only 5 miles long and half a mile wide at its widest point. The downtown area (Centro) of Isla is just four by six blocks. The average temperature is 80 degrees with 60% humidity and the hottest months are June thru September.
There are two express ferry services that will bring you to Isla. Gran Puerto Cancun (The Ultramar) and the Magana Ferries at Puerto Juárez. Both cost 80 pesos one way (about $6.50 usd). The Express boats leave every half hour and the crossing takes 15 - 20 minutes
Coba - Mayan ruins in Quintana Roo Mexico The Coba archaeological zone is located 42 km. west of Tulum. Coba is over 80 sq. miles with 5 lakes and 6500 structures of which only 5% have been excavated. Nohoch Mul is the tallest pyramid in the Yucatan peninsula. It is 12 stories tall and has 120 steps to the top! But from the top you can view a magnificent span of jungle with the tops of other ruins reaching above the jungle canopy.
Their are so many amazing and fun things that you can do in the Caribbean - It's Endless! The theme of these is water! Before Joe took me, I had no idea that the water was such an incredible blue and that it was bathwater warm ALL THE TIME!!! I couldn't believe it! Have Fun!
