Hatim Tai was the King of the Tai tribe who lived in Najd province in the central part of the Arabian Peninsula. His legendary hospitality acquired fame as a great hero of Arabia and a veritable symbol of selflessness, charity and generosity.

Hatim Tai was a contemporary of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, but he never got a chance to meet him. Hatim though was a Christian by faith but he had all the attributes of a Muslim. It is said that if Islam had been offered to him (as it was offered to his son) he would have accepted it.

Hatim's son Adi, who succeeded the Kingdom after his father's death, was first scared of Islam. Adi fled his Kingdom for fear of the Muslims. His sister was taken as a prisoner but was released by the Prophet, peace be upon him. On her return to her brother and who made him travel to Madi'nah to see for himself the exemplary behaviour of the Muslims and how the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, lived, Adi soon embraced Islam.
