Iskandar Dance Company is uniquely placed in the world.Choreographer Alessandro Bascioni uses strong and singular aesthetics, conveying purity of movement, live rhythm and music with dramatic content and complexities without superfluous elements. Through the idiom of Hilal Dance, the Music and rhythm are intrinsically connected to the musicality of the body showing the dance at its core, a cultural tradition reinterpreted as an integrated contemporary expression.
Alessandro Bascioni, international dancer, choreographer and teacher based in both Florence & London, has trained and specialised in Hilal Dance for over 10 years. His earlier training has been in North African dance, African dance. In recent years he has toured extensively with the Hilal Dance Company in major productions including Al Janub (2001) and Aseel (2004-05) where he began his collaboration with the international artist and founder Suraya Hilal.
In 2005 he set up and launched his own Iskandar Dance Company, with the premier of the new work El Saqiyeh (The Waterwheel) in the Tanzhaus nrw Düsseldorf in March 2006. The Company has gone to tour in Europe in many Theatre and Festivals with popular and critical acclaim, among them:

• "There is a meditative subtlety in what the choreographer Alessandro el Bascioni and his fellow dancers achieve -El Saqiyeh is like an oasis of restorative calm. (The Herald) Mary Brennan - Edinburgh Festival
• "Iskandar Dance Companys El Saqiyeh, is slow and flowing. The dancers have a soft, bouncy weight as they take small galloping steps... light and calm as their silken skirt whirl around their ankles". Katie Philips, (The Stage)
• "It was the sense of freedom which ran through Iskandar Dance Company's beautiful El Saqiyeh...Three dancers breeze onto the stage, dancing in unison, encircling one another, weaving in and out..giving a wonderful sense of harmony between costume, dance and music." (Ballet Magazine) Ian Palmer
On El Saqiyeh,
• Alessandro el Bascioni the enigmatic lead dancer shows through his choreography an appreciation of the dimension of his stage and produces dances which although they repeat are rarely repetitivea well hour spent at Sadlers Wells theatre. (Dancing Times) Gerald Dowler
"El Saqiyeh...Shows the vitality of pure dance." (La Tribune de Bruxelles)
•"Steps are so smooth they look like they are gliding..." (The List) Kelly Apter
