Research done at universities in the United States that proposes to use animals must first go through a stringent review process where the use of a particular animal must be justifiable to the research, based on an animal hierarchy. For instance, a research proposal will be rejected if a researcher proposes to use monkeys for an experiment that could be conducted using rats. Dogs are rarely used for experiments, but monkeys are sometimes required in the final stages of treatment testing because they are the closest animal to humans. But at this point, the drug has shown promise in mice, then rats, then hamsters, then cats, then sheep, and finally it is tested on a primate. So, it is our hope that by this time, our drug does not cause these primates to suffer any fate that we would not want to happen to a human. But like I said previously, I see no room for animal testing when developing cosmetics and other things aimed at human vanity. Cheers. -B

I received your comment about the Hubel and Weisel video. Your English is good. If I understand you correctly, you are saying that dogs and primates should not be used for scientific research because it is immoral, using them does not lead to very important discoveries, and instead we should use humans. Well, I tend to disagree with that based on this logic: Every important medical discovery of the last 50 years has been made using animals, and the reason we initially test a potential treatment on an animal, is because testing it on humans would not only be immoral, it would likely cause more human deaths than the disease they are trying to cure.
