RANDOM FACTS ABOUT IRAN:
Babak Khoramdin was Persian:
The historian, Alī ibn Aḥmad ibn Ḥazm (994-1064), in Al-Faṣl fi l-Milal & l-Ahwāʾ & n-Niḥal said: "The Persians had the great land expanse .... Among their leaders were Bābak and others."
Etymology of the word "Persian": One of the largest provinces of Iran is called "Pars" - and was the cultural capital of Iran. The suffix "ian" means 'to originate from.' Pars + ian = Persian. Subsequently, the "P" sound was sometimes changed to an "F," which is where "Farsi" (Parsi), comes from. Persian Gulf is "Khalij-e Pars." "Pars-abad" means city of Persians and is a town in the North of Iran. The Greeks spelled "Pars" as "Pers," hence the words, "Perse-polis" and "Pers-ian."
Persepolis was one of the ancient capitals of Persia, established by Darius I in the late 6th century BC. Its ruins lie 56 km (35 miles) northeast of Shiraz, Iran.
Hamedan, ancient Ecbatana, is one of the oldest cities in the world, and according to the poet Ferdowsi, Hamedan was founded by King Jamshid.
Shiraz has been the centre of Pars Province since the 7th century AD, and it has provided a capital for several dynasties. Its most important function, has been as a major artistic centre, synonymous with learning, nightingales, poetry, roses and at one time, a famous wine (Shiraz).
The earliest written records of the Iranians are the old Persian cuneiform inscriptions of King Darius I in the 6th century BC, but a long history preceded them.
The Persian New Year, "Nowrooz," occurs at the exact time of the Vernal (spring) equinox, when the length of night and day are equal. Translated literally, Equinox means "Equal Night."
Acorrding to the 13th century Persian poet, Saadi Shirazi: "Human beings are all members of one body. They are created from the same essence.
When one member is in pain, The others cannot rest. If you do not care about the pain of others, You do not deserve to be called a human being."
The Cyrus Cylinder, of the Persian King Cyrus (Shah-an-Shah: King of Kings) was dubbed the first declaration of human rights for its advocacy of humanity, justice, and liberty. Cyrus condemned the immoral depravity of slavery in the 6th Century B.C. A replica of the Cylinder is displayed at the United Nations Headquarters.
Cyrus the Great was laid to rest in a modest grave with the inscription:
"O man, whoever thou art, from wheresoever thou cometh, for I know you shall come, I am Cyrus, who founded the empire of the Persians. Grudge me not, therefore, this little earth that covers my body."
The Persian Army defeated three Roman Emperors and captured one alive: The Roman Emperor Valerian was taken captive by Persian King Shapur I after the Battle of Edessa and imprisoned against the backdrop of a massive stone carving showing him kneeling before the Persian King. When Emperor Valerian offered a huge ransom to be freed, Shahpur poured molten gold down Valerian's throat to symbolize that Iran's pride is not for sale at any price.
"History is a mirror of the past
And a lesson for the present."
