The LA City Attorney's Office announces major actions against counterfeiters that included filing a nuisance abatement claim against several of the subjects. Law enforcement is using new tools to address the counterfeit merchandise trade and not only hitting them with criminal charges, but now also going after them civilly. Counterfeiters make huge sums of money and it will only stop when the risk is no longer worth the reward.

Trademark counterfeiting has been used as a source for various terrorist organizations, gangs and organized crime groups to raise money for their causes. This news piece raises some very interesting questions. Intellectual property crimes, such as counterfeiting, music piracy and video piracy are crimes that are low risk and very high reward. The knockoff trade kills our economy and erodes the value of a brand. Don't support criminal organizations by purchasing counterfeit merchandise.

The LA County Sheriff's Department and members of Homeland Security Investigations, Intellectual Property Rights Group took down a software pirate who was selling counterfeit software through Craigslist. The sales of counterfeit and pirated software poses many risks to consumers, who think they are getting a good deal. It can be loaded with viruses and who knows what else. The sellers of counterfeit merchandise are NOT paying taxes on their sales of the bootleg merchandise and are part of a huge black market underground economy that is causing extreme harm to our economy. A study in 2007 showed that counterfeiting and piracy cost the LA County economy over 483 million dollars in lost tax revenue in the year 2005 alone!
