The combat shown was stated as being the very basic of combat. This game has a giant combo system, full of spells and crazy combos. Believe me when I say the combat is not " very basic and repetitive". There are some videos showing how crazy the combat can get.

This game, at least the opening scene, seems to be trying really hard to copy Metro 2033, or even earlier games, STALKER.
