But there some Japanese who are interested in traditional Japanese culture and anime, but its not mainstream. Mostly elderly people are interested in traditional things and there is a small niche of anime lovers. It can be disappointing though when alot of Japanese do not seem interested in some things that are from there country but I understand how they feel because alot of Westerners are not interested in their own culture either like their own history or backgrounds people always like what they are not. I see alot of Japanese here who like modern Western culture or are obsessed with old European things or anything European or from N.America.

Also alot of westerners make a big deal out of sumo wrestling but most younger people here do not care about sumo. Also alot of Japanese do not even own a kimono or even a yukata, my husband does not own any traditional clothing, yet I own kimono and a few Japanese antique decor items. It seems alot of things are just originating in Japan as tourism or export that appeals to Westerners more than Japanese people. So I guess that is the same with anime.

Some things that originate in Japan are made for tourism or for export to other countries. Like for example Japanese traditional things like Geisha and sumo. Most Japanese are not interested in Geisha or sumo, except some older people, like for sumo elderly people enjoy it and a small niche of old business men visit Geisha. I hear alot of Westerners love Geisha & think they are beautiful and neat & even made a book&movie about Geisha. But from the young people I talk to most Japanese find Geisha not pretty and as prostitutes& they are not interested in traditional things like that.

I seen your question asking Kanadajin about anime being frowned on in Japan and I live in Japan too like Kanadajin and I would say yes that is true most people frown about someone liking anime alot and the word otaku has a negative meaning in Japan. And yes anime is everywhere in Japan but I do not see people in love with it like in N.America. In Japan anime is just mainly for little children, unless its hentai which some pervy old men enjoy.
