Ferrets are illegal in California, and people who have them are subjected to the removal and destruction of said ferrets. How would you feel if your cat or dog was taken from you? "But they're illegal." Yes, but a bill was passed and just had to be approved by Governor - he took it back, vetoing it, saying it was too political. We are working on an Environmental Impact Report to prove they are not an issue. In the 1930's the Department of Fish and Game in California banned ferrets, but allowed people to keep them off and on for years after that. But, no longer. They say ferrets will eat wildlife (not true, domestic ferrets eat what they do when little - pet store kibble). They say ferrets will harm people - check the statistics; ferrets have only been involved in very few injuries to babies or people, compared to deaths that number in the dozens per year in the US alone by dogs. All baby injuries were with abused animals who were allowed around very small infants (who does that? seriously?) and injuries indicated the ferret trying to drag the infant. This is what they do; they pull toys trying to hide them. Any pet is not supposed to be around an infant, and the fact that there are only a handful of cases vs. the huge amount of death caused by dogs to children and infants shows just how "dangerous" these little guys are.
An opponent of ferrets who was neglected at less than a month old (left alone with a ferret...meaning mom was at a bar or out drinking, dad was in other room and did not hear infant crying) was injured by the ferret biting her nose. Yes, this can happen with all animals. And likely, since she was being neglected, obviously the ferret was too. If the ferret was starved, this could give it a reason to do what it did.
Any RESPONSIBLE parents would never have had a ferret and infant alone together...and if you think you can't have them in the same house, millions of owners do. Plexiglas gates, locks on cages, etc....there's 100 ways to keep pets and babies together. If "ferret attacks" were really a threat, we'd see many more people like this woman who was neglected by her parents - but we don't. The handful of cases in history have involved ferrets trying to pull infants, as they do toys. Why would you leave these two together? Utter insanity. Even though almost all ferrets would never attempt to harm a child maliciously, they like to play and they play with their mouths, pulling and play-biting. This is the same with dogs - you would never leave a dog alone with a 1 month old.....even if the dog didn't mean to hurt your baby, it could have an accident and unintentionally hurt the infant....the same goes with any pet. Parrots are HIGHLY destructive animals toward people they do not regard as family, and yet they are completely legal. I have been attacked by parrots, and they are highly intelligent but dangerous. Ferrets are not this way at all.
