Correct tempi are not absolute. Gould made it work at this speed because every note was crystal clear, the voices were perfectly balanced, and every phrase sang. He was a wonder.

The images are gorgeous and powerful. The narration is aggressive and small-minded, verging on an attack of the work.

This setting of the text might be the most fitting and evocative. It conveys the mystery of the birth while hinting at the darkness and pain lying in wait in the child's future.

Given the mournful text, this is a little too robust and the tempo is too fast. It's also a little ragged around the edges. I've performed this piece and have heard many better interpretations.

Lauren Ambrose is singing! She studied voice for years.

Scholl has flawless technique, but I prefer Alfred Deller's version, which is slower, graver, more knowing, subtle and moving.
