First they came for the Communists, I did not speak out because I was not a Communist, then they came for the Trade Unionists, I did not speak out because I was not a Trade Unionist, Then they came for the Jews, I did not speak out because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me, and there was no one left to speak for me- Pastor Martin Niemoller on the complicit silence of the protestant clergy during Hitlers Nazi Germany

Gun crime in the UK is rare. Gun crime in the US is common. I've seen 'Police Action' type TV filling entire programmes with gun hold-ups in shops, garages, etc. Gun spree killings in the UK are rare. They're so common in the US that the term 'going postal' was coined. You had one just last week, & one a few months before that (in a university).

Now, admittedly I've only heard this stated as fact but irrespective of this, the sheer volume of gun deaths in America as opposed to other countries is overwhelming. As I said, watch Bowling for Columbine.

What harm is there in owning a gun? You can't know the statistics of gun death in regard of ownership i.e. most people who get shot get shot with their OWN gun. A minority of these incidents are cases of children playing, or cleaning accidents, but the majority result from abortive attempts to confront an intruder & being disarmed & shot.

Cont. I've also heard (in documentaries) gangsters talking about how carrying a gun alters one's perception; how it inclines them to feeling invincible & 'ready for action'. This is well known to psychologists. Gun carrying & ownership breeds death. The statistics prove it.

Watch Bowling For Columbine & *listen* to the reply of the gun owner when Moore asked him what would happen if he tried to take his weapon from him. That response is typical of Americans (in my experience - & I personally know & have spoken to members of the NRA).

Cont. I can imagine many scenarios where innocent people could get shot down by wannabe heros seeking fame in the US celebrity culture e.g. someone spots the gun of an undercover officer & guns him down; a mentally ill person runs down the street with a replica gun shouting abuse; a 15 mins. of fame seeker shooting red paint balls in a crowd.

Yes, I'm sure a shooter would be taken down sooner if everyone is carrying guns but there's a huge flaw in this logic that you, & countless other fools, fail to see: those who would take down a shooter can THEMSELVES become shooters - & will be inclined to do so in a culture that sees no wrong in regular folk gunning down those they see as 'dangerous'.
