About this user

The bi-annual International Piccolo Symposium is held every odd-numbered year at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Founded by Christine Beard, the goal of IPS is to bring piccolo players and enthusiasts together from all over the world to learn about and discuss solo, chamber and orchestral music featuring the piccolo, and pedagogical issues specific to the piccolo, led by some of the world's leading piccolo players.

In 2007, IPS featured Nicola Mazzanti, solo piccoloist in the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Orchestra (Italy), along with solo artist Lois Herbine (Philadelphia, PA) and guest lecturer Nancy Nourse (Canada). Composer-in-residence for 2007 was Davide Zannoni (NY) and the IPS collaborative artist was Christi Zuniga (Omaha Symphony).

In 2009, the artist roster included "The Paganini of the Piccolo" Jean-Louis Beaumadier (France), the return of Lois Herbine, and additional sessions and concerts led by Nan Raphael (U.S. Army Field Band, retired), and Kate Prestia-Schaub (CA). Stephanie Kocher (Univ of South Dakota) presented a lecture on historical piccolos with assistance from the National Music Museum, and the Nebraska Wind Symphony accompanied artists Nan Raphael and Christine Beard on a concert of works for piccolo and band. Dr. Eric Richards was the IPS Composer in Residence, and collaborative pianists were Christi Zuniga and Jennifer Novak Haar.

Planning for 2011 is in progress, with confirmed guest artists to include Lior Eitan (Israeli Philharmonic) and Lois Herbine, with additional guests TBA.
