The Rise to Stardom... Mike Tyson exploded into heavyweight boxing at the youthful age of 18 years old in March of 1985 to knockout Hector Mercedes in the 1st round. As a teenager, Tyson would win an impressive 23 professional fights with 21 knockouts, 16 of them in the 1st round. By the time Tyson turned only 20 years old, the boxing world had turned its spotlight on him as a serious contender for the heavyweight title. Tyson began his boxing career unlike any other breaking noses and jaws, but not before delivering menacing body shots. However, before Tyson's career continues Tyson's beginning must be revealed, Tyson's rise to becoming a champion explains much of why Tyson has gained so much respect by notable fighters a Muhammad Ali, Larry Holmes, George Foreman, and RM Prospect of the Year in 1985. As Tyson, still a teenager rose through the ranks of the heavyweight division, his managers, Jim Jacobs, and Bill Cayton, where very particular in Tyson's selection of opponents. Their plan was to build matches in which the quality of Tyson's opponents would gradually increase from simply pro fighters to journeyman fighters and borderline contenders. These opponents were then selected in which Tyson would be tested in all aspects of boxing, whether it be a slugger as an opponent, a swarmer, a clutcher, a holder or a boxer. Also within that plan was to have the matches occur very frequently. And thus the impressive win streak began. With every fight it seemed Tyson was learning and adapting yet at the same time devastating his opponents with brutal knockout combinations and punches of any variety. The boxing world was stunned at how Tyson knocked the competition, whether it be a right or left, hook, jab, straight, uppercut, or overhand, it seemed it all had the same crushing power. Tyson left fighters broken and unwilling to continue, after only the first round or the first few rounds. The fights that went the distance against were James "Quick" Tillis and Mitch "Blood" Green, and showed that Tyson had in fact possessed the capability to endure a full fight. In fact Tyson's fight against "Hurricane" Jose Ribalta proved Tyson still had the punching power even after a ten full rounds, when he won by a TKO in the 10th round. Tyson's rise to stardom truly convinced the boxing world he possessed the physical attributes to become the next great heavyweight. Tyson's fighting style was that of a "swarmer" like Rocky Marciano or Joe Frazier, in which Tyson utilized his "Peek-a-Boo" style, where Tyson kept his hands high and he slipped and weaved out of the way of the opponent's punches through the use of quick head movement and closing the distance to deliver his own punches. Tyson however also proved that not only was he a very effective "swarmer" but he had the power of a "slugger" like George Foreman or Sonny Liston, because each punch Tyson delivered, was thrown with massive body contortions in which Tyson used his low center of gravity and transfered all his body weight into each punch. Because of Tyson's performance he began receiving nicknames as "the Baby Bull," "Kid Dynamite," Baddest Man on the Planet," and finally the most recognized "Iron" Mike Tyson. With Tyson's whole physical arsenal, he was becoming one of the most feared heavyweight fighters in the world. After the Tyson's knockout spree was cut to 19 KO's by Tillis, and Green, his mystique of absolute dominance with a sure ensuing knockout had been broken. Tyson however simply used the two fights as a learning experience for how to last 10 rounds in a fight and still maintain dominance over his opponents. His next few fights resulted in his same "wham-bam-thank-you-ma'm" 1st and 2nd round KO's. Then came the Marvis Frazier fight. Despite Frazier's disastrous 1st round TKO loss to Larry Holmes in 1983, the son of the heavyweight great, Joe Frazier, was a serious prospect towards contending for the title as well. Tyson however had no problem in knocking Frazier unconscious with a trademark combination that led to a sharp right uppercut within the first 30 seconds of the fight. This fight also proved detrimental to Frazier, as his career as a serious fighter was cut short. A couple more fights proved to be a couple more solid KO's for Tyson and finally he was pitted against Trevor Berbick, the WBC heavyweight champion. With Muhammad Ali attending on behalf of Tyson, who was still only 20 years old, Tyson would outfight Berbick who tried to stop Tyson his tracks, and the fight would end after only two rounds when Tyson caught Berbick with a short left hook leading to Berbick's second knockdown of the fight. Berbick tried to get up but with his legs like rubber, would not let him, and Mills Lane, the referee, called the fight off in favor of Tyson by way of TKO, Tyson became the youngest heavyweight ever at just 20 years and 4 months. Immediately after the fight, Tyson let it be known that he came into the fight to "destroy" which he certainly had done...

Heavyweight Champion of the World... Tyson's intentions from there on were to unify the heavyweight division by holding all three titles (WBC, which he held, WBA, and IBF). In March of 1987, WBC heavyweight champion, Tyson, faced WBA heavyweight champion, James "Bonecrusher" Smith who had just dropped Tim Witherspoon three times in the first round to win by KO and captured the WBA title. Tyson would become victorious after a rather boring 12 rounds of "Bonecrusher" Smith excessively holding and losing by a wide margin in the decision, making Tyson the newly crowned WBA title holder as well. Tyson would deliver a brutal combination to knockout Pinklon Thomas, former heavyweight champion, in the 6th round in his title defense against the number one contender. And finally Tyson faced Tony Tucker, for the IBF title. Tyson would clearly outpoint Tucker in a 12 round decision win even after taking some hard shots early on. Tyson was now the undisputed and undefeated heavyweight champion. Tyson's reign would continue with a calculated Tyson beat-down in the 7th round of number one contender Tyrell Biggs, the 1984 super-heavyweight Olympic gold medalist. Biggs attempted to outbox Tyson, using his Ali-like jab and movement, but Tyson kept coming in and landing big punches, tiring and hurting Biggs, finally, Tyson mercilessly punished Biggs' face, whose head became swollen and bloody and ended with a couple destructive left and right hooks in which Tyson admitted to carrying all his weight in them to avenge Biggs' pre-fight comments. Former heavyweight champion, Larry Holmes would come out of retirement to fight Tyson in a clash of two eras only to be dropped three times in the 4th, giving Tyson another KO win and successful title defense. As part of his honeymoon with newlywed Robin Givens, Tyson crushed Tony "TNT" Tubbs with a hard left in the 2nd round. Tyson's pinnacle of his career however came when he absolutely demolished the previously unbeaten, Michael Spinks with a hard right to Spinks' chin in 91 seconds of the 1st round. Tyson's aggressive infighting tore apart Spinks' outfighting and footwork. Tyson effectively ended another career as Spinks would never fight professionally again. With this destructive victory, it seemed no fighter on earth was capable of facing Tyson's sheer talent; Tyson was simply physically superior to any of his opponents. All who had come to fight and challenge him lost convincingly so no disputes for a rematch were of an issue; in fact it became evident the only way to fight Tyson was to hold him and frustrate him and hope he breaks, besides that, there was no reason to challenge his punching abilitiy because fighters like Berbick found out the hard way that Tyson was simply the best puncher in the division. After Tyson's victory over Berbick as the youngest ever to become champion, Bob Sheridan, the ringside commentator made a prophetic remark, in which he declared the only fighter that had the ability to defeat Tyson was Tyson himself... but for now, he was the king of boxing. Tyson, named RM (Ring Magazine) Fighter of the Year (1986 &1988) now had the heavyweight division was at his knees...
