Song written at IMAEast , May 2007 ~ a Taylor T5 guitar writes it through June Millington. It was then recorded raw as a songwriting demo, and she's joined by Lee Madeloni on drums a year later - and a few months after that by his mom Jean Millington, on bass. Mixed by Lee and June, November 2008. This song has a strong spirit, and a "voice" that June didn't recognize as her own as it came through, although all the sentiments are those that she agrees with completely, and seem to resonate beyond boundaries Feel free to download and replace with your own images. Uploading now in case the link with JuneEsworld doesn't show if you're searching for this video. June and Jean were born and raised in the Philippines just after WWII. Their dad was a Lt Commander in the US Navy (graduate of Annapolis), and their mom was a native Filipina from Lian, Batangas and Manila ~ John Millington and Yolanda Limjoco. Both had seen many terrible things, and their children heard about them and saw the immediate aftermaths of the war. It was truly terrible. June and Jean were also co-founders, and in, the group Fanny.

first in a series ~ vignettes from IMA's Recording Camp 2009. Takes you through a bit of first day instruction with Leslie Ann Jones, some songwriting that morphs into the final recording / its process; and some of the overdubs with Roma Baran, who took over after the first 4 days. Song "Where I Wanna Go" was written by Stephany Marryshow, Sophie Rehmus, and June Millington. Up next will be The Feel's "You're Around" - the girls from Camp I 2007 formed his band and bonded wih Nora from Chicago, who flew in for his Camp as well and played mostly bass this session. Enjoy! From a pre-Show run-through the day of show (June 28, 2009) at our PreTeen Rock n' Roll Girl's Camp this summer. "Girls Rock/Keep Hope Alive" was originally composed by vocal instructor Melanie DeMore and Ysaye Barnwell (perhaps best know for her work with the a cappella group Sweet Honey in the Rock); Melanie added on the "girls rock" section to go with their body percussion exercise, which they worked on all week. This is followed by a segment in the IMA living room perhaps 6 hours later - after everyone had left - and the three main instructors (Melanie, Janelle Burdell, and June Millington) were having fun with a pair of electronic drumsticks (which were used earlier, in the show). This is a side of us the girls don't usually see, off-duty sot to speak and having fun ourselves - as when Camp is on, we have a lot to do!! View of girls playing outside was taken earlier in the week, during a break; and intern Ally Lesser, who called us when she first came to Hampshire College and has been an invaluable help to us during Camps in the summers / during the school year, appears with the girls in the performance of "Girls Rock!". Invest in the Future ~ donate to IMA. hanks for watching!

Video recorded in December '07 and edited then so I could send a copy to my sister Jean, Lee's mother. You can practically see the snow falling in some of the shots, it was that lovely early snowfall weather. On our property in Goshen, utterly enchanting. Lee sings and plays everything except for some guest elec guitar by his pal Chris, who dropped in for a few days. The drums were recorded in the shell of what became (all of) the studios, and this was literally done just before work was begun on building the "floating" floors, preparatory to all framing. The day after these shots, the entire room had to be cleaned up and plastic partitions went up, so I'm so glad we got these beautiful vignettes. Where Lee plays bass, guitar and keyboard, you can see at the far end what is now a studio door to isobooth A ~ the only door with full-length glass for line of sight all the way to the main control room. Lee did his first gig with Jean and me at IMAWest when he was just turning 14 (a New Year's Eve dance with the Slammin' Babes), and he had a hard time keeping up a hard - read fierce and unrelenting - shuffle on "Heatwave"! It didn't take him long though ... and he did his first recording session with us on "Welcome (to the Real World)" a few months later, which is on our "Melting Pot" album. So my taping him at IMAEast seems ... natural. Lee co-produced (with me), played and recorded/mixed the debut cd's of Naiakete and Kristen Ford through our "portal", Many Doors. Kete and Kristen both attended our very first Rock 'n Roll Girl's Camp here in 2002, so all the connections, and the music, are very strong. Enjoy!

Sophie Rehmus, who has attended 5 IMA Camps, 2 Recording and three Performance ~ is working on her first ep at IMA which is also her senior thesis. "Simple Things" began on acoustic guitar and turned into reggae sometime this summer ~ it just wanted to be fun!, and simple... but we had to wait 'till after Camps finished in August to begin work on this collection. After Pre-Production Sophie, Lee and I decided we could do everything in one weekend, which we did. With good charts, a good song, an excellent artist and studio ~ anything is possible! As I had injured my knee I wasn't able to do as much shooting as I wished last weekend, but luckily Ann agreed to do several passes. As we were in separate rooms for (recording) isolation it wasn't easy, but she got enough of the basic for me to work with. I then video'd Lee playing bass and conga, sitting all the while at the main console area.. and then we added harmonies. Lastly, I added electric guitar lines; you'll see Lee admiring the wood on my vintage Fender Jazzmaster, which I bought in a pawnshop in New Orleans probably in the Fall '74. [normally I would have used more footage of Sophie singing, but we can always shoot more later]. This is a hard-played and well-loved guitar that surely has a long and interesting story to tell. It lets out a bit of that deep vibe on "Simple Things", giving us that sweet tone that speaks volumes ... and everything just fits together nicely. Sohie's lryics express something very special in a simple and authentic way, which to my ear is powerful and refreshing. I'm glad I got to be a part of its unfolding. Sophie Rehmus: Vocals, songwriter Lee Madeloni: bass/drums/percussion, recording engineer; add'l harmonies. June Millington: arrangement and electric guitars/add'l harmony
