About Me:
We are in the midst of a "global crisis". While problems are overtaking the world, they are also sinking deep into our lives, and our future is getting bleaker by the moment. The collapsing economy, tiring domestic political games, surging unrest around the globe, terrorism, and pointlessly long wars -- these demand our focused attention so we may begin to examine ourselves ...to understand what is happening with us and how to survive in the emerging new world—the world in a state of emergency.
We are "global" not only in the financial sense, but also in the social and emotional sense. We affect one another so intensely that it can trigger social fires in one country after another, passing from one hot spot to the next through the connecting fibers of the World Wide Web.
We can't keep pretending we have some security - by raising shields of indifference around ourselves. We must acknowledge the changes and respond to them accordingly. In the words of Joseph Stiglitz, "The economic crisis presents us with a unique opportunity to invest in change."
As one people, we must face the facts: the future of the human race requires the cooperation of all its members. Reality dictates that we declare our INTERDEPENDENCE.
"You may say that I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one. I hope someday you'll join us, and the world will be as one." -- John Lennon
The economy is the mirror of how we relate to each other. Therefore, trying to fix the economy without fixing the way we communicate is destined to fail.
We must look at the root of the crisis and address the real problem— egoistic, self-centered nature of the values prevailing in our society and manifesting in our economy.
The current economy is based on a simple principle: personal benefit above all. But today, we are so interdependent, that personal gain is no longer working. It is time to create an economic model of reasonable consumption and mutually responsible conduct.
Instead of blaming the one percent, let's blame the true "devil": the egotism in human nature. This will be the first step toward controlling it. Redistribution of wealth without a moral awakening of the entire humanity will bring no positive results. In fact, the bitter experiences of the communist revolutions in the previous century are warning us against it.
Instead, what can bring us stability, prosperity, and bright future is interconnectedness and a unified, heartfelt effort toward a common goal. What determines our success is whether we can change the "globalization of anger" into globalization of care for all (T. Friendman).
We need to build a new system and a new, UNIFIED society, founded on the principle of MUTUAL RESPONSIBILITY that will:
1. Guarantee that everybody's basic needs are met, including food, housing, healthcare, and education.
2. Create an environment of mutual consideration and support.
3. Lead to reasonable consumption of our planet's resources.
The solution lies in shifting our mindset from self-entitlement to social entitlement, which means putting the society first and our egos next, because this is the only way we can also benefit ourselves.
"The significant problems we have cannot be solved at the same level of thinking with which we created them." (A. Einstein)
"Your actions can influence the actions and feelings of others around you, which in turn can spread into still others, and then to still others. Life is better because of our relationships" (Nicholas Christakis).
Therefore, mutual responsibility is not some noble notion that we can choose to ignore at will. It is a fact of life, and we must act accordingly.
We need to have the means to create socially mindful media, one that promotes mutual responsibility, mutual consideration, and helps make us aware of our interdependence.
Since it was social networks which started the OWS movement, they can also be used to create the new, socially oriented, human mindset.
All other media, just like with the OWS movement, will follow. If "life is better because of our relationships" (Christakis), then let's fix our relationships. This will in turn fix the economy, which will in turn fix social gaps, which will in turn fix a billion other problems of our society.
"We are all in the same boat," says Nobel Prize laureate in economics, Paul Krugman. And the boat is breaking up because of our disparity. So let's not be disparate; let's tell ourselves and our friends that it is vital that we all have life's bare necessities, that my happiness depends on your happiness, and vice-versa, and that only together, communicating as interdependent equals, we will achieve a viable solution.
"The pursuit of happiness is not a solitary goal. We are connected, and so is our joy."
