YOUTH EMPLOYMENT FORUM
Youth Employment - Emploi des jeunes - Empleo Juvenil
Young people today build the foundations for the economies and societies of tomorrow. They bring energy, talent and creativity to economies and make important contributions as productive workers, entrepreneurs, consumers, agents of change and as members of civil society. Yet the lack of sufficient or sustainable decent work makes young people extremely vulnerable.
With its tripartite constituency and global alliances, the ILO can be a catalyst for action on youth employment. At the national level, governments, along with employers' and workers' organizations, are major players in the development of youth employment policies and programmes.
The ILO Youth Employment Programme operates through a global network of technical specialists at its headquarters in Geneva and in more than 60 offices around the world. It provides assistance to countries in developing coherent and coordinated interventions
on youth employment.
"As long as millions of youth are un- or under-employed, globalization will neither be fair nor just. Helping young people to realize their productive potential and to harness their energies and talents to shape a better world is our challenge and our responsibility today, and our gift to our future".
Juan Somavia, Director-General
International Labour Organization

World of Work Report 2012: Better Jobs for a Better Economy
The ILO launched its annual report "World of Work Report 2012: Better Jobs for a Better Economy". The new study examines the performance of different countries since the start of the global crisis through the prism of the quantity and quality of jobs.
It provides a comprehensive analysis of recent labour market and social trends, assesses risks of social unrest and presents employment projections for the next five years. The report emphasizes that while employment has begun to recover slowly, job quality is deteriorating and there is a growing sense of unfairness. Moreover, given the pressure on governments to rein in expenditure, policy efforts have focused on structural reforms to boost employment creation. However, if policy instruments are not carefully designed, they could exacerbate the employment situation and aggravate further equity concerns, with potentially long-lasting adverse consequences for both the economy and society.

Child Labour - Travail des enfants - Trabajo Infantil
More than 200 million children in the world today are involved in child labour, doing work that is damaging to his or her mental, physical and emotional development. Children work because their survival and that of their families depend on it. Child labour persists even where it has been declared illegal, and is frequently surrounded by a wall of silence, indifference, and apathy. But that wall is beginning to crumble. While the total elimination of child labour is a long-term goal in many countries, certain forms of child labour must be confronted immediately. Nearly three-quarters of working children are engaged in the worst forms of child labour, including trafficking, armed conflict, slavery, sexual exploitation and hazardous work. The effective abolition of child labour is one of the most urgent challenges of our time. Amid growing concerns over the impact of the economic downturn, the ILO has warned that efforts to eliminate the worst forms of child labour are slowing down and called for a "re-energized" global campaign to end the practice. HIV/AIDS: A Workplace Issue
In a relatively short period, the pandemic of HIV/AIDS has become one the most critical workplace issues in our time. In addition to the epidemics devastating impact on these women and men and their families, it affects the world of work in many ways. For example, discrimination against people with HIV/AIDS threatens fundamental rights at work, undermining opportunities for people to obtain decent employment. Following consultations among governments, employers and workers, the ILO in 2001 adopted a Code of Practice on HIV/AIDS and the World of Work. The pioneering Code is designed to help prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS while managing and mitigating its workplace impact. Among the Codes key principles are non-discrimination, gender equality, a healthy working environment, no HIV testing for purposes of employment, confidentiality and the continuation of the employment relationship. Increasingly, the code is serving as a reference point for employers and trade unions negotiating agreements on handling HIV/AIDS in the world of work.
