25 января 2004 года «Бенфика» приехала в Гимарайнш, чтобы сыграть с местной командой «Витория». Игра транслировалась в прямом эфире, «Бенфика» вела 1:0, Фехер, выйдя на замену, получил жёлтую карточку в компенсированное время и внезапно склонился от боли и затем упал на землю. Игроки и персонал клуба пытались помочь Миклошу до приезда скорой медицинской помощи, но прибывшая скорая не смогла помочь(по пути в больницу его сердце останавливалось 3 раза, первые 2 раза врачи смогли «запустить» сердце, но на третий раз врачи уже были бессильны), Миклош умер от гипертрофической кардиомиопатии. Ему было 24 года. В память о нём «Бенфика» навсегда закрепила за ним 29 номер, под которым он играл в клубе. Его помнят многие, и его смерть вызвала глубокий шок в португальском и мировом спорте.
