WHAT IS A HOUSE CONCERT?

A house concert is a chance to experience music in a warm and intimate environment. It's when someone opens up their home and invites you to share in a performance by one of their favourite acts.

You get to meet the performers and they'll happily sign a CD for you. A house concert is also a great social evening for friends and neighbours.

YOU CAN HOST ONE IN YOUR LIVING ROOM

The US house concert scene has been developing for quite a few years, but here in the UK, there's not so much going on. But the scene is growing.

So take a look at some of these videos and imagine. You could have a talented act play for you, your friends and neighbours right in your living room.

And here's how ...

You just invite 25 or more friends, family, neighbours, co-workers - and whoever else, to a concert at your home.

Round up all your chairs (patio furniture, etc.) and arrange them concert style. You may need to move stuff around a bit to make it work. Cosy is good, you won't need a PA unless the house is really big (70 folks or more).

Guests arrive half an hour before the show starts and have time to have a quick drink and a few nibbles (you can provide these, or often the guests bring a 'pot-luck').

Artists normally play a 45 minute listening set (house concerts are not parties; folks really sit and listen - up close and personal) and then take a 15-20 minute break for socializing, selling CDs and refreshments. Then another 45 minute set to finish.

House concerts are a crucial way to support talented, independent artists - directly. There is a 'suggested donation' (about £10 in the UK). This will be money that goes directly, and in full, to the artist. You're really helping talented performers make a living, because agents, record companies, venue owners and other middlemen don't get a cut.

You may already know some great performers, or you can tap into the network by getting in touch with existing house concert hosts - or talk directly to the artists. Go on; you'll love it!!
