That's a nice little ride on the Goldfields tour. I went on a couple of trips on it when I was a kid, and my grandfather used to run the miniature railway at the Waikino Battery, and that was a cool little setup as well.

Although they are much maligned, they are one of my favourites, purely because the engineers somehow manage to keep them alive and kicking after nearly 4 decades of solid service. It is truly baffling...

It is hard to mistake the GE-built 4 stroke diesel thundering past. Bit harder to tell the sound between an MTU and an EMD 12-645 but up close I'd have the EMD any day

That sounds about right. They use the same EMD 12-645 engines as the DC classes but the DFT and B classes use a turbocharged version rather than a Roots-blown type. That way it can better use the power to drive its six traction motors. I read they have a tractive effort of about 200kN

Shit that's a fair haul for one loco. Amazing that it managed to make it up the Matata grade on its own. Its a proper motor killer that grade. Any idea why the second haul had to hit the anchors suddenly?

I've never seen a slag pot used for a steel pour. I used to service the hydraulics for NZ Steel and they always had separate vessels for slag and steel.

Listen to that rattley old EMD 567. They should nana that thing if they want to keep the 567 in there, otherwise it'll have to be swapped with a 645 which will effectively make it a DC

That turbo'd 645 almost had a 710 ring to it...
