I came up with the same answer as mihassan, ie 2 x 2^25 = 2^26, but with a totally different approach using combinatorics.
But his approach is a lot smarter than mine :)

I think the answer could even be better explained by using color chalks, eg the first half of the coin's circumference (and of the straight line as well) is drawn in red while the second half in green. This could help people imagine :)

You had previously left a subway ticket on the gate machine and then when your hands were on it, one of your hands (maybe the right hand?) moved quietly the card onto the gate's "validator"?
