another glamourisation of the Romans? Lol, the Romans hardly did any of their own fighting, they used simple foreign policy of divide and conquer, and auxiliaries did the dirty work. Use one lot of barbarians against another.

The roman soldiers were roman,but they had also the auxiliary which were not roman as a detachment of the army,the auxiliary after 20 years service became roman citizen.
