About Me:

When and why did you start playing/singing? I started to get interested in guitar around the age or 7 or 8, my mum played the electric guitar and had her own little microphone set up on the old tape deck stereo lol. I was too stubborn to learn the guitar from her so i began trying to teach myself. After a few years i met a young girl named Tatupu Fata, and she came from a big family of musicians. Her parents decided to help us start a little band up, it was me Tatupu and a couple of other girls, we did a lot of gospel medleys at the time. We played at weddings, church's and tried busking for a while. We eventually grew apart as we got older.

What was the first tune(s) you learned? The very first song's i ever learn't to play were 'You are my sunshine, Killing me softly and purple rain' mum used to teach me bass chords instead of full chords because it was easier for me to learn.

Is your family musical? Definitely, i am so blessed to have been born into such a talented family. My mum (along with her two sisters) can play the guitar and sing. My Koro used to play the harmonica stevie wonder styles, I have an older cousin Caleb who can rock the guitar like Carlos Santana & Andy Mckee combined and i come from a long line of entertainers.

Which famous musicians do you admire? Why? I looooove Beyonce, she has such an amazing voice and is still herself at the end of the day. She isn't big-headed or nasty she is real. Another musician i adore is Lauren Hill because her style is so raw, whether she's singing, freestyle rapping or just having a stand up jam.

Were you influenced by old records & tapes? Which ones? Definitely, i have to admit that i'm a nanny's girl. i used to listen to her old 50's and 60's music almost every weekend. The Inkspots, The platters. The Drifters, Prince Tui Teka, Dennis marsh, you name it! ..I was a bit of a dork with music to i would sit up late when American/Australian or NZ idol was on and i would tape all my favourite singers and then watch the tape's back until they hardly worked anymore haha.

Who are your favourite local musicians? Groups? Number one musician would have to be... hmmm.. Maisey Rika! her voice is one of a kind, Maisey could sing the dullest song ever written and make it sound the shit. She's humble and quiet and she is such a great influence. big shoes to fill i think, she's definitely set the mark high for other NZ musicians. and number one group? i'm gonna have to say NRG Rising, not only is their music unique and easy to bop too but unlike a lot of other groups i think that NRG Rising have worked their arse's off to get where they are now, it hasn't just been handed on a plate. you fulla's need to go and here these ladies live cos the songs that they perform are right on point with the recorded tracks! chur.

Have you been in competitions? Any prizes? This year i will be entering X-FACTOR NZ 2012!

How do you handle mistakes during a performance? I recently performed at a mid-winter festival in Taihape and went completely blank half way through the performance. I just had to focus on not making it worse so i improvised, made up my own words and kept to the tune. It was sweet as, just glad no one knew the actual words! haha.

Do you get nervous before a performance or a competition? yeah really bad, about 3 seconds before i start needing to go to the toilet or i fret and skull glasses of whatever cause i don't want my voice to crack and things like that. i have gained a lot of confidence now that i know people enjoy listening to my music and stuff but nerve's will never leave i think.

How do you balance your music with other obligations? It's actually pretty easy. Some times i won't play or sing for a day or two then i have these urges to go and record something or a little tune will pop up in my head so i quickly record it on my phone or on the camera so that later i can turn it into a song or something.

What would you say to people who support you? Word's can't even explain how grateful i am. I started my youtube channel just as something to do i guess, and that was a few years ago. I love reading comments and getting requests for dedications and people asking for CD's and whatever. I'm just amazed at how much a few comments or a couple of messages can motivate you to keep uploading and to keep recording.
