Let me release you from this confusion. Altaïr can't swim because of a glitch/bug in the Animus system. That glitch/bug was fixed in the Animus 2(or whatever it's name was in AC2). Simple as that ^^.

It wasn't the most underrated game of 2011, it was just another amazing game among other amazing games that came out last year. One of them had to stand out, and that was Skyrim. It like they say, everyone can't win.

Best area of the whole game, it was the only one which screamed Final Fantasy everywhere. The music only boosted the experience.
