Thank's for the kind words and glad that you liked the backscratcher. I suppose that there isn't a technical reason of any kind that I named it an "Appalachian Backscratcher" but I did try and put carvings on it of plants and animals that made me feel at home, and home for most of my life has been in the heart of the southern Appalachian mountains. Of course the Appalachian mountains run the length of the eastern United States from Alabama all the way up into Quebec, Canada. I tried to make it especially rich with carvings that are reminiscent of the deciduous forests in the mountains of North Carolina such as the red newt, green snake, and wild flowers. Besides these reasons I also have a love for the folk art that originated in the Appalachians and hope that this Appalachian backscratcher might tickle someones interest in that area also. Thanks again for your interest!

Very intricate and interesting also nicely carved and decorated. Being three thousand miles or so from the Appalachians I hope this is not an ignorant question - Why is it called an "Appalachian" back scratcher?
