The way I see it, Google is trying to remove 'social features' from YouTube channels to push people onto their Google+™ platform.
There has been a long going effort to connect:
- GMail with GoogleSearch ("GoogleAccount")
- GoogleAccount with YouTube (shared login/password)
- GoogleAccount with SIMCard (Android Smartphone)
- YouTube with SIMCard (allows 15min+ video uploads)
- YouTube with Google+ (social features)
This allows Google to create a very comprehensive profile of their users. I find it a questionable move, especially since Cellphone IDs (real person) can now be linked to more private matters such as Google search history.
