About this user
(Assoc Press) - Eileen Baker of Tampa, Florida, used her deep faith in Christianity as a defense in a recent reckless driving charge brought against her. On July 17, 2008, Baker was driving her Ford pickup truck when the song "Jesus Take the Wheel" came on her car radio. Baker decided to let go of the steering wheel & apply her makeup, believing literally that Jesus would take the wheel. Her truck sideswiped another vehicle, then smashed through a storefront entrance into a checkout stand.
Baker was hospitalized with serious injuries, but no one else was hurt. Her lawyer succeeded in having the reckless driving charge & damage bill overturned, based on Floridas Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1998, & the Free Exercise Clause of the 1st Amendment of the American Constitution.
The other vehicle's owner, the store, the hospital & the government were left holding the bill: $1500 damage to the other vehicle, $23,000 damage to the store, a $52,000 medical bill for Bakers injuries, & $28,000 for Bakers legal costs.
Isn't faith a wonderful thing! The good Lord protects his faithful flock from discrimination & unfair costs! Praise Jesus!
