Under the leadership of its chief conductor Andrew Manze, Helsingborg's Symphony Orchestra has developed a personal sound that is clear, spirited and expressive. This is a result of the musicians' considerable expertise and commitment, combined with a carefully and purposefully cultivated style of playing. The orchestra has an almost unique ability to blend precision and discipline with the joy of playing.
In 2008, the orchestra toured the USA from coast to coast, giving twelve acclaimed concerts. The Washington Post wrote: "The Helsingborg musicians dug into the music with crisp attack, rounded tone and superb ensemble."
The HSO's internationally recognised qualities have laid the foundation for collaboration with a long list of highly ranked soloists and conductors. In addition, they have resulted in several sound recordings being made. The International Record review wrote about the orchestra's recording of Beethoven's "Eroica" for Hamonia Mundi: "This Eroica may confidently take its place with some of the finest available -- those of Weingartner, Furtwängler and Abbado (all conducting the Vienna Philharmonic)." Wilhelm Stenhammar's two piano concertos with Seta Tanyel were released recently. The Guardian gave that recording five out of five possible stars, explaining that: "The performances, bigger in scope and scale than any we've heard before, are exceptional." That recording was for Hyperion. Soon, German CPO will be releasing Brahms' four symphonies. Swedish Radio had a major initiative at the end of 2009 when they recorded five concerts, for both live and later broadcasting.
Helsingborg's Symphony Orchestra was formed in 1912, making it one of Sweden's oldest. The orchestra currently consists of 61 musicians from ten different countries.
