It kinda makes sense that a dictionary would include charred cloth as that would be more common in the cities and towns where the dictionary was read. An outdoorsman would have no use for a dictionary, except as kindling naturally.

For punk wood, try charring it in the fire with some tongs instead of in a tin. That way only the outer surface is charred and it should hold together better. You can buy dehydrated sweet corn here in the south. It's called Chicos. Apparently, it's dried on the cob (sometimes smoked) and then rubbed off. I'd assume this is better since frozen corn is cut off the cob and you don't get the whole seed/grain (whatever corn is).
