Two Rivers Gala: Benefiting Tougaloo College
Upon returning to Mississippi, Dr. Irons and Ms. Winters wasted no time trying to get a group to plan a similar event to benefit Tougaloo. They had no success until they mobilize other alumni of
Tougaloo that shared their interest in putting on the event. These alumni included Fred Alexander, Lorma Miller, Worth Thomas, Connie Baird Thomas, Roosevelt Turner and Beverly Williams, which conducted several meetings and attended the Memphis event, before coming up with a date and the labeling of the event (Two Rivers Gala). The first step was to find a venue to hold the event. It was thought that Jackson had no facility at the time that would support two or three indoor stages for entertainment. Several of the founders toured the Jackson Medical Mall and decided that it could work. Jackson Medical Mall became the Two Rivers Gala's first sponsor and by agreeing to provide the facility for the event. Simultaneously, some of the founders were securing financial sponsors for the Two Rivers Gala, several businesses saw the vision and became sponsors including BellSouth, Mississippi Power Foundation, Nissan, and Time Warner Cable. A steering committee was formed and the idea of an event benefiting Tougaloo became a reality, the Two Rivers Gala. The goals for the Two Rivers Gala are to: (1) raise funds for Tougaloo College; (2) bring together a diverse group of Mississippians who want to have fun at a black-tie event; and (3) provide great entertainment showcasing a variety of national and Mississippi musical talent.
