About this user

HAOS FILM was founded in 1997 in Austin, Texas by director Athina Rachel Tsangari and writer/editor Matt Johnson, fellow film-school graduates at the University of Texas at Austin. The impetus was the production of the feature film The Slow Business of Going, begun originally as a graduation thesis, which went on to screen in almost 20 international film festivals and win awards.

The Greek incarnation of HAOS began when Athina was invited to direct and produce the HD video and laser projections for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, as a member of its Creative Team, led by Dimitris Papaioannou.

Since 2004, HAOS has been involved in a wide variety of projects as a production company, creative office, and post-production facility for editing and animation. In 2007, producer Maria Hatzakou joined Athina and Matt to make up the principal trio.

Among their recent production highlights are Reflections, a giant-scale animated projection show commissioned for the opening of the Acropolis Museum (2009), and two films directed by rising star Yorgos Lanthimos: Kinetta (2005) and Dogtooth (2009) as an associate producer ("Un Certain Regard" prizewinner at Cannes and 2011 Foreign Language Oscar™ finalist ).

In 2010, HAOS produced the film Attenberg, written and directed by Athina. It premiered in competition at the 2010 Venice Film Festival (where it won the "Coppa Volpi" for Best Actress and the Lina Mangiacapre Award) and has played at almost every major festival including Toronto, Sundance, London BFI, Rotterdam, Thessaloniki (Silver Alexander Award), New Directors/New Films, the Whistler Film Festival (Best Feature), FICUNAM in Mexico (Best Director and Audience awards), BAFICI in Buenos Aires (Best Director), International Women's Film Festival in Dortmund-Cologne (Best Film), and the New Horizons Festival in Wroclaw, Poland (Grand Prix). It was selected as Greece's official nominee for the 2012 Academy Awards, and it's a final selection for the European Parliament's 2011 LUX Prize and for the European Film Awards.

In 2011, HAOS produced Yorgos Lanthimos' third film, ALPS. It premiered at the Official Competition at the 48th Venice Film Festival where it won the Osella Award for Best Screenplay, and had its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
