Alvin Prather, a Washington DC native, had long enjoyed dance, but it was not until the late nineties, when introduced to the 'new' contemporary Hand Dance, that Alvin developed a genuine passion for the dance and its culture. As he worked with some of the 'giants' of contemporary Hand Dance, Alvin continued to develop his skills and knowledge of the dance. With a desire to share this knowledge with others, Alvin completed a two-year Instructor Certification Program in 2001, and soon thereafter, founded the Smooth Rhythm Dance Academy for Hand Dance and Bop. Through the Academy, Alvin continues to promote and teach the dance, polish his individual skills through competition and continued education, and perform Hand Dance demonstrations throughout DC, Maryland, and Virginia. Alvin currently teaches beginner and intermediate Hand Dance at the Joy of Motion Dance Center. Alvin's background is business law, but his passion is Hand Dance. A 1979 graduate of the Georgetown University Law Center, Alvin has practiced Business law as a member of the DC Bar for years, but along the way, he has found time to enjoy and share his passion of Hand Dance!
