On some level I suppose you're right, i.e. that my "inner mentor" is telling me not to believe you. What it really comes down to, though, is that I've seen through the beliefs enjoined by religion, and found them to be in error (and often morally and ethically problematic). My logic and reason tell me that there are better answers than those which religion has supplied.

I appreciate you sharing all of this with me (and I do mean this). With regards to coincidence, again, the mind is a powerful thing, and it seeks patterns and agency even where none exist. Sometimes one thing will happen, and we'll convince ourselves that it's connected to something else (i.e., praying to a god to make it happen). It's hard for me to say too much more without a specific example; if you'd like to share one, perhaps we could discuss it. No worries if you don't want to, of course (though if you'd be more comfortable PMing me, I promise you my discretion).

This actually gets to the heart of one of my biggest critiques of religion (at least, Christianity, Judaism and Islam): this idea of pornography as "sin" is part of a larger complex of beliefs that is designed to alienate you from your own innate, human nature. There's nothing wrong with having sexual desires and wanting to watch pornography, because humans are sexual creatures. That's not all we are, of course, but the point remains: sex is an integral part of who and what we are, and there's nothing wrong with that.

Religion convinces you that pornography is wrong in order to control you. If you're convinced that something which is hard-wired into your DNA is wrong and that the only remedy is Jesus, your mind is the perfect host for the memes (replicating ideas) of Christianity. In essence, Christianity has convinced you that you are sick in order to "sell" you a snake-oil cure, when the truth is that there's nothing wrong with you.

Okay, finally getting back to you, sorry for the delay!

I'm sorry to hear of your struggles with pornography. I used to have the same problem, but after becoming an atheist I gradually came to the realization that it *wasn't* a problem, not really. What I realized was that there's nothing wrong with pornography in and of itself: it's perfectly natural and, indeed, can be very zestful and healthy. I only thought it was a problem for the same reasons you did/do: a religious conception of "sin", reinforced by clergy (and, at least in my case, by childhood indoctrination in the home).
