I personally don't think this version is bad; granted I'm a bigger fan of his ballads. The fiddle adds a very different touch--sounds similar to George Strait's early honky-tonk stuff.

He has his flair at the end, especially with a more emotional voice comparative to his '85 Hee Haw performance...

I'll also say this...forget Jack Ingram's version of this song. You can't play a Texas song any better than this.

And the funniest part, the bird flying away singing "On The Road Again"

Would love to hear songs like this on Modern Country stations.

Funny, George Strait has so many bad breakup, lost-love songs, and he has been in his marriage for 30 yrs...

I have a feeling Norma wouldn't want to leave him probably for the fact that she'd have to hear all of these songs.

@jcjr87 Thrashers, Blue Jackets and the Predators are expansion teams. The Coyotes used to be the Winnipeg Jets and then were sold last minute to people to move the team to Phoenix.

@audio1966 Garth Brooks was only on the show to present the award to George Strait, as sort of a "passing of the torch". I'm interested to see him as well, though I hope he makes new songs similar to those from the early to mid-90s, instead of the later songs.

@teamjacob5588 To me, it would be if you were to exclude the chorus. But it is a very good cover and he performs it as it should be, soft and smooth.

Here's what I want to know...was Jackson's exit customary during this period in time (never saw these shows live). Because he moved off the stage after that final chord.

@captainmyi I'll be honest...I've heard the version in 1980, and I own the version of "...And Ones I Missed" (after 2005). I prefer the latter because his aged voice gives age to the song, and makes it really feel like a pain the character has carried for so many years.

Wish it wasn't true for these two...what an amazing run and an equally amazing cover.

Like this version much more than his live version or Luke Bryan's, but wow. Kenny Chesney sure did change his image somewhere between then and now. With his voice and looks in this one, something tells me he could do a fifties song, as it was done in the fifities.

@historyzzz How can you tell? There is a clip of a cover of this song by a different artist, and all he is doing is strumming as well, but he's performing live.

Sorry Easton Corbin, you're voice isn't the greatest for this. But I do respect the fact that you're covering a Conway song that doesn't begiin with Hello and end with Darlin.

Ray's song is too slow, though I do like his voice and the instrumental. Stuck between Cal Smith's and Strait's version, very hard to determine what is better.

@donaldsegar Keep in mind though that 20 yrs before 1971, country music was dominated with a bass violin and maybe a steel guitar. Come around this time, more symphonic sounds started developing, and for those who loved Hank WIlliams and Ernest Tubb, those like Glen Campbell were not new country...

Classic George Strait and Texas Country--just as good as the Rebel, Bakersfield, and crossover sounds of the 70s, and on a whole different level than today...

When video games in the 90s, and the networks in the 70s through the 80s made their own music for the sports they were presenting, that was awesome. They should totally be integrated into the videogames today.

@adamsb33 The beginning of pop music, at least from the female side. A lot of people loved it; course most who like this will take this over what's on the radio today, and vice-versa.

This performance just proved to me that modern country music singers can sing; its just Nashville that thinks that the sound that they put behind these singers are good.

I can't believe CNN would decide to go thorugh the debacle of no bells and whistles to tell the candidates to wrap up, and the system of asking the people live for the questions. It slows it down, and doesn't get as much broadness of questions that a debate should.
