ProBono reunion performance October 17th 2010 @ The Lemon Grove in Youngstown, OH. 'Troubled' is a song I used to do with Mystic WIP back in the day that I wrote given my proclivity for the blues - literally and figuratively. Lyrically, it's in the traditional theme of: 'Blues ain't nothin' but a good man feelin' bad.' In the title I'm telling myself that I choose to feel 'blue'. Which I think is true for the most part, but not always. Though, on some level, I feel there is always some choice involved.
The audio is pretty blown out I'm afraid. It was tweaked with a fancy mutiband EQ and this is about the best it can sound given the blown-out source audio. During the crescendo in the solo lots of my 'shreddy bits' get washed away in a sea of low-end butt fuzz. This upsets me, thus continuing the tradition of choosing to be troubled. :P
I'm playing my Koa Strat (love that guitar) through a Keeley modded TS9DX (Flexi 4x2 - switch up - dial on +) into a Reverend Goblin (loaded w/a Weber Alnico speaker) that is connected to a 1x12 Reverend ext. cab (loaded w/their infamous All-Tone 1250 speaker). I had a fairly loud stage volume. Also the cab was miked so I imagine the All-Tone is providing the majority of the sound. I take it up a notch in the solo with the wonderful Nick Greer 'Relic Drive' - his take on a TS808. Through a clean tube amp, (usually a Reverend Hellhound) those two pedals are my 'go to' sound when playing blues or blues rock for a dual stage overdrive tour de force!

A quick little homage to SYL and Devin Townsend with a few mistakes thrown in for good measure. The camera was much closer to the stereo speakers than my amp, which was plenty loud in the room, but not so in the recording. It seems the acoustical output of the guitar is louder than the amp! I'm using my DC Standard (which sounds excellent for metal but squeals uncontrollably with microphonics from the bridge pickup when at higher gain and volume) into a Keeley modded TS9DX (drive @ 8 o'clock, level @ 2 - tone @ 9 - switch up for "baked" mod in TS9 mode) into a Boss GE-7 into a Blackstar Series One 100 with a Lee Jackson Mr. Springgy in the effects loop into a Zinky 2x12 converti-cab. It sounded GREAT in the room but again, unfortunately did not pick up well in the vid. I'll be doing a vid dedicated to the Blackstar at some point in the future....
The self titled 3rd album by Strapping Young Lad was the first SYL/Devin CD that I purchased, opening the door to the musical world of Devin Townsend. I saw them open for Meshuggah at Peabody's in Cleveland and it had a profound effect on me, thanks to both bands head-ripping and spine-crumbling respective performances.
