Will I ever know my friend The memories to a bitter end While I was puttin' school clothes on You were fighting in Vietnam
How could I ever begin to see? What possible reason it all came to be The dreams that keep you awake in the night That which has brought you through a perilous fight
The friends that afforded their lives by your side The reason you stay bottled up And seem to want to hide
No one could ever go The places that you've been Not unless you took em' And why go back again?
Unless it's to retrieve the lost Who suffered at such grievous cost The ones who sent them Never to repay The ones who called them, left them betrayed Underneath stacks and files of red tape Leaving all to wonder there must be some mistake
No, I will never know of yours The things you suffered Or what you endured
I can only hope and pray
They'll bring the rest of you home someday.
