(1) In 111 BCE, the Chinese Han Dynasty consolidated Nanyue into their empire. For the next thousand years, Vietnam was mostly under Chinese.

(2) Chữ Nôm is a now obsolete script for recording the Vietnamese language. It makes use of Chinese characters (known as Hán tự in Vietnamese), and characters coined following the Chinese model.

(3) Although Vietnam lies geographically in Southeast Asia, long periods of Chinese domination and influence has resulted in the emergence of many East Asian characteristics in Vietnamese culture, and generally Vietnam is said to be part of the East Asian cultural sphere, known widely as Chinese cultural sphere.

(4) In August 1945, the Japanese surrendered to the Allies, created a power vacuum in Vietnam. In southern Vietnam, British forces landed in Saigon to disarm the Japanese, followed by French troops trying to re-establish their rule. In the north, Chiang Kai-shek's army entered Vietnam, also to disarm the Japanese.

(5)The Việt Minh force grew significantly with (((China's assistance))) and in 1954, under the command of General Võ Nguyên Giáp, launched a major siege against French bases in Điện Biên Phủ. The Việt Minh force surprised Western military experts with their use of primitive means to move artillery pieces and supplies up the mountains surrounding Điện Biên Phủ, giving them a decisive advantage.

(6)In 1947, full scale war broke out between Viet Minh and France. Realizing that colonialism was coming to an end worldwide, France fashioned a semi-independent State of Vietnam, within the French Union, with Bảo Đại as Head of State. Meanwhile, as the Communists under Mao Zedong took over China, Viet Minh began to receive military aid from China. Beside supplying materials, Chinese cadres also pressured the Vietnamese Communist Party.

(7) The Vietnamese government has continuously requested an official apology for the invasion from the Chinese government, but the Chinese government has never apologized about its invasion of Vietnam.

(8) The legacy of the war is lasting, especially in Vietnam. The Chinese implemented an effective scorched-earth policy; while retreating back to China. They caused extensive damage to the Vietnamese countryside and infrastructure, through destruction of Vietnamese villages, roads, and railroads

For the first time in history, the Vietnamese nation had to cope with the invasion of a Western country. Subsequently, the country was driven into backwardness and deadlock. Viet Nam became a semi-feudal colony for nearly 100 years from 1858 to 1945
