Asoka the great (264 to 227 B.C.), one of the great monarchs of history, whose dominions extended from Afghanistan to Madras... is the only military monarch on record who abandoned warfare after victory. He had invaded Kalinga (255 B.C.), a country along the east coast of Madras, perhaps with some intention of completing the conquest of the tip of the Indian peninsula. The expedition was successful, but he was disgusted by what be saw of the cruelties and horrors of war. He declared, in certain inscriptions that still exist, that he would no longer seek conquest by war, but by religion, and the rest of his life was devoted to the spreading of Buddhism throughout the world. He seems to have ruled his vast empire in peace and with great ability...For eight and twenty years Asoka worked sanely for the real needs of men. Amidst the tens of thousands of names of monarchs that crowd the columns of history, their majesties and graciousnesses and serenities and royal highnesses and the like, the name of Asoka shines, and shines, almost alone, a star. From the Greece, Volga to Japan his name is still honoured. China, Tibet, and even India, though it has left his doctrine, preserve the tradition of his greatness...In the history of the world there have been thousands of kings and emperors who called themselves "their highnesses," "their majesties," and "their exalted majesties" and so on. They shone for a brief moment, and as quickly disappeared. But Ashoka shines and shines brightly like a bright star, even unto this day.

A Ortodox Buddhist and a huge admirer and student of shamanism. Shamanism has existed before people were preaching the word God, shamanism existed since the mankind started to walk the earth. Shamanism is what introduced man to nature. Shamanism is very ancient going back to the very beginning of time. It is not a religion it is a way of "seeing" and "being" and one that fits me like a glove. I have great respect for the whole of creation and am very grateful to know my place in it all.

Discovering Shamanism was just the same as coming home for me. I felt such a sense of belonging and happiness. I refuse to believe those who try to tell me that I cannot be a "believer" and still practice in this way. In all things I allow my intuition to rule.... being from the highest source.

Don't try to use what you learn from Buddhism to be a Buddhist;
use it to be a better whatever-you-already-are.

The Buddhist definition of faith is : BELIEVING WITH CONFIDENCE THROUGH UNDERSTANDING AND WISDOM.

Buddhism is the 'awakening' from the delusions of life.
Buddhism is the medicine to ignorance, craving and ill-will.
Buddhism is the discipline of wholesome deeds in mind, body & words.

Buddhism does not support anyone to escape from reality.
Buddhism does not support the view of a Supreme Being who send people to hell for not beliving in him.
Buddhists are not slaves or servants of any Gods or Buddha.
Buddhists do not believe in evangelism.
Buddhists do not worship Buddha.
Buddhism is not a religion that relies on a 'savior' to save us all from the mass of suffering, nor is it one that requires us to become saviors of the world.
Buddhism does not promote material gains and support material views.
Buddhism is not an organized religion that assigns chief authority to a single person or group (e.g. Head of X-religion.).
Buddhists do not condemns non-believers or non-followers. Anyone is free to study and learn the Dharma regardless of whether he/she is a Buddhist or not.
Buddhism is not a religion that believes chanting mantras (sacred words), performing ceremonial rites, practising self-mortification (such as walking on fire, going naked, fasting, etc.).

Pay no mind to those who talk behind your back, it simply means that you are two steps ahead...

The teachings of Buddha are eternal, but even then Buddha did not proclaim them to be infallible. The teachings of the Buddha has the capacity to change according to times, a quality which no other religion can claim to have...Now what is the basis of Buddhism? If you study carefully, you will see that Buddhism is based on reason. There is an element of flexibility inherent in it, which is not found in any other religion..

Of the great religions of history I prefer Buddhism, especially in its earliest forms, because it has had the smallest element of persecution. Buddhism is a combination of both speculative and scientific philosophy. It advocates the Scientific Method and pursues that to a finality that may be called Rationalistic. In it are to be found answers to such question of interest as "What is mind and matter? Of them which is of great importance? Is the universe moving towards a goal?

What is man's position? Is there living that is noble?" It takes up where science cannot lead because of the limitations of the latter's instruments. Its conquests are those of the mind. I cannot myself feel that either in the matter of wisdom or in the matter of virtue Christ stands quite as high as some people known to history.
