BIOGRAPHY OF GJERGJ KASTRIOTI †"SCANDERBEG"†

THE GREATEST ALBANIAN HERO :

Gjergj Kastrioti is Albania's greatest hero. He was born in the 6th of May 1405, in the Stelushi Castle, in the Mat District of Dibër County, Albania. The Kastrioti family were a noble Albanian family in the middle Ages. The Kastrioti dynasty originally hailed from the Dibër region in Albania. Pal Kastrioti, the founder was Roman-Catholic (as the majority of Albanians at that time) and had good relations to the Republic of Venice, the Kingdom of Naples and the Papacy. His son Gjon Kastrioti († 1442), father of Skanderbeg, migrated to the castle of Kruja, where he was proclaimed prince of the city and the region surrounding it. His mother was Vojsava Tribalda, Albanian Princess from the Pollog valley, North - Western part of present-day Republic of Macedonia, which back then was part of Albania.

He even fought against the Greeks and Serbs, some sources say that he used to maintain secret links with Ragusa, Venice, Ladislaus V of Hungary, and Alfonso I of Naples.

Kastrioti was given the title "Atleta Christi" {Champion of Christ} by Pope Calixtus III. The Name { Skanderbeg } comes from the name Turks called him, Iskender Bey, meaning "Lord Alexander" or "Leader Alexander", comparing him to former Illyrian - Macedonian warrior, Alexander the Great.
The Italian baroque composer Antonio Vivaldi composed an opera entitled Scanderbeg (first performed 1718). Another opera entitled Scanderbeg was composed by 18th century French composer François Francœur (first performed 1763). Dragon Of Albania! Gjergj Kastrioti died on the 17th of January 1468 (aged 62) in Krujë, Albania. His burial was at the Saint Nicholas church of Lezha, Albania. An old Albanian folk song written in his honor.
