If anyone says Goku doesn't look asian because he's Saiyan, that person should be shot in the face!
Stop with this "Goku is an Alien so he can be any race" bull shit! It shows in history that America (White America) is arrogant. Movies wont sell if a white face is not shown in a movie. Dragon Ball is loved all around the world by many people but to attract fans but more so the non-fans they have to make the leading Character which is Goku "White" thats how a movie sells. It wasnt about Goku looking white in the anime(which he doesn't), its about what sells. Name one all Asian Cast movie that actually made a box office hit in American theaters besides Bruce Lee. The Forbidden Kingdom was the same way. They could have had a black kid, Asian or a Hispanic Kid in the Forbbiden Kingdom Movie but it won't sell in American Theaters.
Saiyajin which again is a japanese anagram for a fictional alien race who bear a strong resemblance to asains just like kryptonians look white. He was given a japanese name by akira toriyama. my point is goku is from japan realistically speaking he's a japanese superhero. the character itself was invented in japan hence he's japanese!
To make my point clear Will Smith was given the role to play Super Man and Captain America in the next upcoming movie and he turned it down. Smith said
"You mess up white peoples' heroes in Hollywood, you'll never work in this town again!" (But apparently u can mess up with Asian ppl's hero- Son Goku- and getaway with -Justin Chatwin!) If Smith was to obtain the role of Super Man I bet you majority of White American's would go out their mind changing Super Man which was normally white and make him black and making threads in forums about superman's color. Dragonball was based on Journey to the West, the manga/anime is from Japan, Goku is supposed to be Asian. Do not create excuses for the Fox executives that felt that an Asian lead wouldn't be a big enough box office draw.
The Saiyan storyline was created later on in Dragonball Z, not Dragonball and was not originally planned by Toriyama when he created the story. Before that, Goku was his interpretation of the Asian monkey king from Journey to the West. It's obvious to anyone not trying to make up excuses for this movie that Goku was supposed to be/look Asian in the manga/anime series created for an Asian audience by an Asian manga artist/writer, regardless of the alien background that appeared later in the story. "He's an alien, so technically he's not Asian" is a just a weak attempt to excuse a poor casting decision.
Besides the fact that Goku lives in an asian themed world, wearing asian attire, and speaks Japanese, there's also the fact that Goku and the story of Dragonball was, in the asian creator Toriyama's own words, supposed to be set in a Chinese setting, based on the Asian story Saiyuki or "Journey To the West" about the journey of Asian Monkey King, made for an Asian audience. All of these facts should make it obvious to anyone with some common sense that Goku is supposed to be Asian.
It's fine if you don't think Goku looks Asian, that's your opinion, but don't go starting up arguments with people who have facts to back up their claims solely on your own interpretation of Asian art style.
When Toriyama decided to create Dragon Ball, he used author Wu Cheng'en's Journey to the West as inspiration for his own series. The name Toriyama adopted for the character is the Japanese romanization of 孫悟空 (Sun Wukong), who is the central character in Journey to the West. To be creative with the character, Toriyama stated that he designed Goku not as a monkey like the Journey to the West character, but as a human-looking boy with a monkey tail. Though Goku is treated as a person from another planet, Toriyama initially had the idea to give him the identity of person from Earth, but with the introduction of adding fighters from other planets it was established that Goku is a Saiyan...With the exception of their monkey-like tails, Saiyans have an outward appearance identical to humans but with a much larger muscular build. Akira Toriyama, in helping to design characters for the first television special, noted that originally he conceived Saiyans to have only dark hair...The Saiyans' most visually impressive trait is the ability to transform into an Oozaru (大猿 Ōzaru, lit. Great Monkey)...Toriyama explained that Goku's gi uniform is modeled after the robes worn by the Shaolin monks of China, being that he wanted Dragon Ball to take on a Chinese feel...Due to his devotion to Earth, Goku prefers dressing in a gi uniform, and has refused offers to adorn the Saiyan battle armor, being that he considers himself an Earthling.
