This was written by Charles Wesley - who was undoubtably a genius. So many of his hymns, written around 250 years, ago are still perfectly singable and haven't become as anachronistic as many newer hymns.

This tune is actually an arrangement known as "Westminster (Sacred Harmony) which is based on Purcell's Fairest Isle. This arrangement first appeared in John Wesley's 'Sacred Harmony' in 1780. The hymn itself is in 8787D metre so it'll go to dozens of tunes.
