The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance - Song by Gene Pitney

The Man who shot Liberty Valance

    Song by Gene Pitney

    GeneMcNutt GeneMcNutt commented:

I think of this movie as John Wayne's greatest Western. It ages well, and seems serious and believable. The casting is perfect and the characters are memorable. Of course, it's one of the saddest Westerns ever, also. I know that "The Searchers" gets a lot of acclaim, but I pick this as Duke's...

    Finding Ben Hogan

This is my swing after a 1 year commitment to improve my golf game, using Ben Hogan as my ideal model. I'm about the same size and I've always adm...

    GeneMcNutt GeneMcNutt commented:

Your backswing is not as long as Hogan's. You have adopted his flat backswing, though. I must agree with the writer who says that having a handicap of over 5 strokes is nowhere near as good as Hogan. Hogan wasn't a good putter, but was a tee-to-green genius. It seems to me that with work on y...

    THE PROTESTANT REFORMATION

To all you good catholics out there, please voice what you think of this clip. What would you do to these men today? Can you see their reasoning ? ...

    GeneMcNutt GeneMcNutt commented:

There has been so much hostility and hatred between Protestants and Catholics in past centuries that it would be wonderful if that could be put behind us and we could discuss theology in a spirit of love and respect for one another. Whatever differences in belief there may be, followers of Jesus...

The Man Who Shot LIBERTY VALANCE * Gene Pitney

The Man Who Shot LIBERTY VALANCE

    GeneMcNutt GeneMcNutt commented:

I think this movie was John Wayne's greatest Western, and a great movie deserving to be rated more highly than it is by film critics. The song is wonderful, and should have been sung over the credits. The scene about who's going to pick up the steak from the floor is one of Duke's most powerful...

Eleanor Powell - A Lifetime of Hard Work - Homage 04

Eleanor Powell, the Queen of Tap, worked very hard with her body. Ballet and acrobatics as a child, and tap dance when she was nearly 20. She never...

    GeneMcNutt GeneMcNutt commented:

You're right; it gives me a lot of joy to watch her dance. I'm so glad that they had invented movies in time to capture her. And not only is her dancing incredible, she comes across the screen as a really nice, sweet person, which everyone says she was.

    Fred Astaire & Eleanor Powell

    Broadway Melody (1940)

    GeneMcNutt GeneMcNutt commented:

Betsy Booth is right; Eleanor did great dancing alone, because she was like no one else, and when she danced alone, she wasn't limited by the other person. Fred did some great dancing alone, too, but there are times when you need a couple to dance together, and surely there was never another dan...

    The Broadway Melody of 1940

    Eleanor Powell & Fred Astaire

    " Begin the Beguine "

    From " That's Entertainment !

    GeneMcNutt GeneMcNutt commented:

Eleanor was his favorite dance partner ever, I believe. Of course, Ginger Rogers was not only a great dancer, but also a great actress, and won an Academy Award for her acting in a role without music. But perhaps even Ginger would concede that Eleanor was "The Queen of Tap Dancing," as she was ...

The Sons of Katie Elder Theme

The theme of Henry Hathaway's "The Sons of Katie Elder" (1965).

    GeneMcNutt GeneMcNutt commented:

This theme music is some of the most magnificent I've ever heard in any movie. Thrilling, stirring, with tremendous drive.

    The Searchers Theme

The theme for John Ford's "The Searchers" (1956).

    GeneMcNutt GeneMcNutt commented:

Duke was great in this movie, but I believe his own favorite of all his movies was "The Quiet Man." My favorite of his Westerns was "The Man Who Shot Liberty Vallance." In it, he doesn't seem to be doing a self-caricature, as he does in some.

I'm amazed at how beautiful the women were who traipsed around Kansas at that time. Actual pictures I've seen don't look anything like the women who frequented Dodge City on these shows.

    GeneMcNutt GeneMcNutt commented:

Jack Elam makes a memorable bad guy. He made a movie with John Wayne, and Duke told him (not in the movie) that there are 4 stages in an actor's career: (1) Who's Jack Elam? (2) Get me Jack Elam, (3) Get me a Jack Elam type, (4) Who's Jack Elam?

    GeneMcNutt GeneMcNutt commented:

I must take exception with tss77. Chester isn't a worthless idiot (although I don't think I'd want him as a deputy), he's just severely limited in his capacities, compared to Matt. Chester is sort of like Barney Fife to Matt's Andy Griffith.
