this ad is true. pcs are windows. yes, you can run os/2 warp or linux or whatever, but basically you are stuck with what MS ships.

i don't understand what they are rambling on about. windows is highly configurable and it's noob-friendly. the reason unity sucks is because these people don't have the chops for software UI design. you don't have to sacrifice power for simplicity. it's a false dichotomy.

except that the foss world likes to crank out new text editors and file systems. three years and it's still a rough blueprint. it'll take them a decade to have a usable video stack. whereas closed source devs could crank it out in a year or two.

i think the way apps are managed in windows seriously undermines the other great features. every app has its own installer and if the install break you have to hunt down and erase the files manually. its a nightmare, why don't they use bundles like osx or pcbsd? makes life much easier.

to comments below. i think the effort should be made to make linux work better since it already has momentum. as a desktop OS, freebsd sucks so much that it would be better to implement the missing linux features that freebsd has, then spend time on distros like PCBSD. freebsd is losing many user...

@Salemboot your talking about the kernel, propably the most stable piece of software in the linux stack. the rest is mostly alpha quality cack compared to windows, osx or other nixes. if finder was as buggy as nautilus there would have been mobs of people with firetorches.

because ubuntu releases alpha quality software as stable. ms does painstaking regression testing before releasing their OS. ubuntu just packages upstream crap and calls it good. debian stable is a good alternative, but it has poor usability.
