This YouTube channel has been created by John Barnard, Graham Jackson and Myrddyn Phillips and will, over time, host clips of some of our past, present and future surveying projects, as well as individual surveys of various hills in Britain.
About Me:
As Britain has in excess of 200 different hill lists, of which the majority are based on some set of criteria, hill goers have countless bagging opportunities to choose from. However, how accurate are these lists that hill walkers aspire to complete? Hill data are derived from Ordnance Survey maps and heights on these maps have a margin of error of +/-3m. Consequently, hill lists provide an opportunity for detailed surveys in order to measure heights more accurately. The techniques we use for our work are levelling (with surveyors automatic level and staff) and differential GPS. It is not our intention to cause disorder through our activities but quite the opposite, as our work, will in time, create definitive and reliable lists of hills.
Numerous hill reclassifications have resulted from our recent surveys. The elevation of Mynydd Graig Goch in Snowdonia to 2,000 ft mountain status, the determination of Wiltshires highest point and the reclassification of Sgurr nan Ceannaichean from Munro to Corbett status all caused varying degrees of media interest.
All of this necessitates hours spent gathering data on the hills. This prolonged time on a col or summit affords a rare opportunity to observe the beauty of landscape, with its many varied colours and ever changing moods. It is also an opportunity for filming with the Digi-camcorder. This brings an added element of fun into the proceedings and, as it isnt our intention to show near perfect and rehearsed footage, this can sometimes result in an odd verbal slip-up. This is in contrast to the rigor we adopt for our surveys which are carried out to strict protocols. Perhaps our Digi-camcorder efforts should be viewed as part informative, and part fun. After all, we wouldnt be doing any of this, if it were not for our long-standing appreciation of the British hills.
