What you described sounded like a Taunt Party to me. They're people who fool around on Wi-Fi by showing of tricks or simply taunting next to eachother (some people find it more entertaining that way). If another player shows up and starts attacking, the Taunt Partyists team up to force the competitional player(s) out of the room. Of course, sometimes the competitional player(s) are just way too good and end up scaring off the Taunt Partyists.
