Interests and Hobbies: Research -- Dr. Mark Holley and members of the GTBUPC working with Brian Abbott and Dave Thompson of Nautilus Marine Group are developing cutting edge technology that is re-defining underwater surveying of shipwrecks. Depending on the size and scope of the survey area (and depth) it could take 2, 3 or maybe 4 years to do a complete survey, and that's if weather cooperates! ---Now, with the use of sector scanning technology, that same area can be done in 4-8 hours and measurements can be accurate down to an inch! It even penitrated through (in the Great Lakes) Zebra Mussels, Quagga Mussels! While these (invasive species) mussels greatly increase water visibility for divers, they do pose problems for shipwrecks.--- To find out if they are in your lake (Michigan), go to www.gtbup.org and see other invasive species (Fish, plants). Protect your waters! So, not only do you get fantastic scans of shipwrecks but you also get exact GPS coordinates and measurements of timbers, positioning and in some cases (depending on additional equipment used) location of metals associated with the shipwreck! This technique is re-defining how underwater surveys are done and is saving the GTBUPC thousands and thousands of dollars in a typical survey season!
