To me,making a song is a lot like writing an essay in school.It helps to follow a set of rules for writing hit songs just like you would writing essays.First you will need a topic,or an inspiration for your song.Next,you need to decide on the musical style,rock pop,ect.Once you have the musical and maybe vocal ideas that you want,you have to arrange the parts of your song in the standard way,(Intro-1st verse-1st chorus-2nd verse-2nd chorus-solo,and/or bridge-3rd chorus-ending...This is just a rough guide for song arrangement).Once you have reached this point, you have to work out all of the little details,like how the song should be layered together so the vocal parts do not clash with the music,which guitar/keyboard/bass harmonic convergence effect is perfect,fine tweeking the drums and how the vocal parts should be sang to match the tones of the music.Believe it or not,I believe a good drum/bass line is the most important part of most modern hit songs,it is the foundation.I have found that the only way to really make sense out of all of this is to record/video yourself doing the song and than watch/listen to it back to really get the prospective you need,especially for the volumes and tones.Attempting to make your own hit songs takes a lot of practice and work,but if you approach it like writing an essay,following this rough guide of standard rules,it is not as hard as you think,and you'll be surprised what you learn...
