The mistakes people are making in good explosions are 1: They do them near water and 2: they are above ground. Water mitigates the blast damage and if you do it above ground the TNT on top will just fly off and be wasted.

I once buried 1,152 blocks of TNT. If you do that, never die in the explosion because that lags more, sometimes to the point of having to shut down the PC.
